Performing Qumulo Core Upgrades by Using the Web UI

IN THIS ARTICLE

This article explains how you can upgrade Qumulo Core by using the Web UI.

REQUIREMENTS

Notes:

  • Cloud clusters and on-premises clusters require different upgrade images. Before upgrading, verify compatibility.
  • For notifications about new Qumulo Core releases click Follow button in the Product Releases & Announcements section of Qumulo Community.

PROCESS

A container-only instant software upgrade has a downtime of less than 30 seconds, without disruption to the operation of the cluster, while a platform upgrade requires rebooting all the nodes in your cluster.

The following instructions explain how to begin the upgrade process and perform each upgrade type. For more information, see Qumulo Core Instant Software Upgrade.

Important: To allow certain background processes to run, multiple sequential Qumulo Core upgrades might require a waiting period between specific releases. Before  installing multiple Qumulo Core releases within an extended maintenance window, contact the Qumulo Care Team.

To Begin Upgrading Your Qumulo Core Cluster

  1. Upload the upgrade file qumulo_core_x.x.x.qimg to any directory on your cluster by using a client protocol such as NFS or SMB.
  2. Log in to the Qumulo Core Web UI.
  3. Click Support > Software Upgrade.
  4. On the Software Upgrade page, enter the file system path for the upgrade file (without the leading slash), for example upgrade/qumulo_core_5.0.3.qimg.
  5. Click Upgrade...
  6. The Ready to upgrade? dialog box appears.
Depending on the upgrade type, continue to one of the two following sections.

To Upgrade Your Qumulo Core Cluster by Using Instant Software Upgrade

An instant software upgrade has a downtime of less than 30 seconds and doesn't disrupt the operation of your cluster.

  1. On the Ready to upgrade? dialog box, confirm the current and new versions of Qumulo Core and then click Start Upgrade.
  2. On the Software Upgrade page, the upgrade process is displayed.
Qumulo Core prepares the upgrade then installs Qumulo software on your cluster.
When the upgrade is complete, the message You have successfully upgraded from Qumulo Core x.x.x to y.y.y is displayed.

To Upgrade Your Qumulo Core Cluster by Using Platform Upgrade

A platform upgrade requires rebooting all the nodes in your cluster. You can perform either a complete reboot or a rolling reboot.

Note: The Web UI might redirect you to the Cluster is booting... page when the node to which you are connected reboots. To view the reboot status, you can either connect to a different node or wait until the current node comes online and then click Support > Software Upgrade.

  1. On the Ready to upgrade? dialog box, choose one of the reboot modes.
    • Complete reboot (with SMB and NFS client interruption): You can't access your cluster during reboot.
    • Rolling reboot (with SMB client impact): You can access your cluster during reboot, but SMB connectivity to specific nodes is impacted.
  2. Click Start Upgrade.
  3. On the Software Upgrade page, the upgrade process is displayed.
Qumulo Core prepares the upgrade then installs Qumulo software on your cluster.
When the upgrade is complete, the message You have successfully upgraded from Qumulo Core x.x.x to y.y.y is displayed.
